Mandriva seems easy to use. You'll also need Samba (www.samba.org). I think
Mandriva comes with it, but it will still take some work to configure. You
can use the 'swat' admin tool to configure /etc/samba/smb.conf. Samba
doesn't have active directory AFAICT.

Hmmm...(re-reads articles) looks like you can join Linux to active
directory but not the other way 'round...As long as I can have some
kind of authentification that alows me to give acces to certain users
on the windows workstations to certain files on the server, I guess it
will be ok.

Samba can easily act as a "traditional" windows file-sharing system, so
that should do what you want, I think.

Good luck!

Samba can be a pain... several friends claim it's trivial to set up, but I've
never had much luck with it. There's a web-based config called SWAT,
you might look into that (I've never tried it, I'm afraid).

Well, I had the OS up and running for all of ten minutes before I did
something that 'broke' it...Now it's stuck in command line because kde
will not load anymore...All I did was to try to put it in 1024x768
rather that 800x600 cause the windows were not fitting so I could not
click on the <next> buttons...Half of the mandriva site is in french
and the other half want's money before i can see anything usefull.
Perhaps I'll try a different distro...

If you feel like debugging your display problems, you might have to
manually fix your XF86Config file (Google will help).

As for other distributions... Fedora is easy to install. Debian is nice
but I wouldn't recommend it to someone unfamiliar with Linux. I have heard
good things about Ubuntu but haven't tried it myself.
I don't know how easy it will be to set up any of these to DWYW. I have
successfully used Samba with a few different distributions, but don't know
what else you need...

THE LESSER-KNOWN PROGRAMMING LANGUAGES #10: SIMPLE

SIMPLE is an acronym for Sheer Idiot's Monopurpose Programming Language
Environment. This language, developed at the Hanover College for
Technological Misfits, was designed to make it impossible to write code
with errors in it. The statements are, therefore, confined to BEGIN, END
and STOP. No matter how you arrange the statements, you can't make a
syntax error. Programs written in SIMPLE do nothing useful. Thus they
achieve the results of programs written in other languages without the
tedious, frustrating process of testing and debugging.

Hmm. Ubuntu is a Debian derivative - I heven't used Debian, but I'd
imagine they both look/feel similar.

Though the support for Ubuntu is *really* nice - they cover some
complicated stuff like Apache, Samba, DHCP, and other servers in the
help section. Plus, they mail for free :). What more could you ask for?

True, the interface is very different to that of Windows, but it's not
so different that it's impossible for a reasonably computer literate
person to learn. Applications menu for applications, Places for
connecting to remote servers and folders on your computer, and System
for configuring your computer.
